El Corral Cremat

Cosecha

2014

Here’s the perfect bottle to introduce those in the fine-wine community to the potential of Catalunya’s fine sparkling wines (...)This pure-Xarello wine from the 2012 vintage is straw-gold in colour. Fruits? Look out for yellow stonefruit in place of apple and grape – yet there’s a huge amount to enjoy, too, in the wine’s allusions to meadow grasses in high summer, to sweet crumble toppings, to the perfumes of wild flowers.

Briny olive, Seville orange, very aromatic pear, tarragon, pretty, nice zip, fluid mid, salty, not hugely driven or exciting but lots of detail and layers, salty nut, the nose is bigger than the palate. Xarel-lo from a cool, high-altitude vineyard in the Ordal mountains. There's plenty of complexity here - salted nut and briny notes speak of some maturity, whilst seville orange and pear fruit are still concentrated and fresh. There's a tarragon-like herbal lift, and plenty of zip and drive - although it isn't a hugely tense of Xarel-lo, very enjoyable on release.

Complex and layered with a rich toasty character, offering aromas of bruised apples, preserved lemons and subtle nuttiness. The palate is full and creamy with depth and structure, showing fine bubbles and a lingering finish. A solid and well-made sparkling wine. Nicely developed and structured. Drink now or hold.

The Catalonian sparkling-wine scene is in full ferment at present, with a huge range of ground-breaking wines finding their way to market -- though a glance at the vintage date on this wine shows that this is a revolution that has been in the making for over a decade now. The wine is pale-gold and fine-beaded. That heady scent of dry grasses, cream, herbs and wild flowers could only come from Xarel-lo, and only from Catalonia, too, with all its Mediterranean distinctiveness. The wine is mouth-filling, dry and structured, as perfumed on the tongue as it is in the glass, and ideally suited not only as a head-turning aperitif but for mealtime use, too.
